Punxsutawney Phil On Groundhog Day Is All Of Us

On Tuesday, North America celebrated the time-honored tradition of holding up a clueless groundhog to predict whether spring will come early or if we'll get six more weeks of winter weather.

Groundhogs in multiple ceremonies, from Georgia to Canada, were in agreement that we will, indeed, have an early spring after they failed to see their shadows.

But the groundhogs clearly appeared to be...less than OK with it.

Maybe it's because they have names like Shubenacadie Sam and Punxsutawney Phil.

Or maybe because these annual appearances basically involve getting manhandled in the cold with hundreds of people looking on.

Punxsutawney Phil reportedly tried to make an escape at one point during his appearance Tuesday morning in Punxsutawney, Pa., where the temperature was estimated at 22 degrees.

But no, he was quickly rounded up and held up for all to see, because people really get into it. Like, really into it.

Good news for Punxsutawney Phil and his compatriots: They won't be hauled out for another year. So thanks for the sacrifice in the name of making a completely unreliable prediction.
